"A love letter to Patrick Rothfuss and Brandon Sanderson. A detailed world, a thrilling pace. If you're looking for a new fantasy universe to immerse yourself in, look no further." -Cristina Mull
Posing as a sorcerer was never a smart idea. Now, it may cost Taro his life.
Sixteen-year-old Taro lost his right leg years ago, but with a family to support, he doesn't let it slow him down. For years he's worked for a notorious crime lord named Victor Mathan; Mathan deals in stolen magical artifacts, and trusts Taro to finish his work with as few questions as possible.
When an absurdly well-paying job comes up, Taro is quick to volunteer. Mathan wants him to break a powerful sorceress out of her magical prison, but her cell is under the control of an ancient military order called the Magisterium. To get to her, Taro must pose as a Magisterium recruit.
The courses are grueling, the tests drive students mad, and the magic they teach can be as deadly to the caster as it is to the target.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fantasy read! The characters literally came alive on the page, both the good guys, as well as the villains. The main character Taro is especially well written and is the perfect blend of innocence and roughness that comes from living a hard life. This is a very realistic fantasy, so to speak, and none of the characters are all good, or all evil. They all have their reasons for doing what they do, and the reader can see the world from their perspective, though you’re unlikely to agree with their reasoning all their time. The plot is also very fast paced, so this is a real page-turner, and the twists had me guessing right up until the end. I can’t wait for Book 2 to be released!Product details

The Reach Between Worlds The Arclight Saga Book 1 eBook C M Hayden Reviews
The world building is fantastic. I enjoyed all the locations and felt like I was there. The characters have already earned a place in my heart.
I loved this book.
It's an exciting well written story you won't soon forget.
Hayden has all the earmarks of becoming another Sanderson, eventually.
A great book from young Master Haden! Very well put together. The book has a great magic system. Characters are very real and likable. Can't wait for book 2!
The writing level is reminiscent of Harry Potter but the author seems to have been influenced by Sanderson and perhaps Rothfuss as well. It's a light read but not glaring bad.
A hint of Rothfus, with the magic rules of Sanderson and a touch of Arakawa this introduction to the Arclight Saga was beautiful.
I started the book a while back, but had many other things on my plate, had to get a new phone, which was how I was reading it at the time and stopped.
Then, after I finished a few books I finally dug my teeth into this book. I have to say, Taro is an interesting protagonist. He is somewhere in the moral grays, he tries to be good, but well his decisions get in the way. I love how this book deals with consequences and it has some nice twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Fantastic coming of age fantasy with a hint of all three authors.
This book could have easily become a Harry Potter copycat. For a bit, as the magic classes and new monsters were described, I thought we actually HAD taken a side trip to Hogwarts' darker alter ego. A magical illusion that makes a room seem like the great outdoors, shifting corridors and stairways... very Rowlingesque. But all of that detail turned out to be important, so all's good.
The world is well imagined and easy to believe in. The magic is well done, conforming to some basic rules so it doesn't become a cleche' fix-all that makes you wonder why they didn't just do whatever spell and avoid the whole trouble. The monsters are somewhat Lovecraftian in flavor.
My only real problem is with the character Vexis. She's so... well, vexing. On the one hand, she has the personality of an over-the-top evil genius. Yet for most of the book, you can't quite decide if she's a good gal or bad gal. Her end is rather anticlimactic, too, which is disappointing. I would have preferred her to be a bit less of a caricature.
Overall, a pretty good book, and well worth a read.
Hayden does a great job of setting up a believable scene with awesome characters. The author makes Taro go off on and adventure not because he wants to be the very best or it is what Taro thinks is right, but because he was blackmailed into doing so. Taro having to struggle and connive to make it in the new world he is thrust into makes him more relatable and believable than if he did it off of skill alone.
All the characters are expertly written especially the antagonist we meet later in the book who is acting not because she drank pure evil juice but is instead looking out for her sister like Taro is. The parallel there messes up the line between good and evil which is refreshing from the typical "everyone that doesn't side with the protagonist is evil." All in all it was a enjoyable experience and it made me want to read more of his work.
